With a production period from 1967 to 1979, in the late 1960s Rolex launched the Reference 1680, the first Submariner to display the date on its dial. The first version of the Submariner date was made in steel, and for the first years of production the dial bore the Submariner inscription in red. This steel example bears a beautiful Mark IV dial, featuring, among other things, the depth expressed first in feet and then in metres.
